Cantaloupe Sundae
Recreating this nostalgic cantaloupe sundae dessert recipe brought back so many fond memories. As a kid, I had an elderly neighbor named, Mrs. Cully. She lived across the street from us one house up on the right.
She had a red brick home with white shutters and a stone driveway. I always knew when she had guests because I could hear the stones crackling underneath the wheels of the car when someone arrived.
While her kids were grown, her grandkids would often visit her. They were a few years younger than me, but still a lot of fun to run around the neighborhood with.
I remember Mrs. Cully had a huge closed in porch on the back of her home. It had blue “scratchy” carpeting and white whicker furniture. Every evening around 5-6pm her and Mr. Cully would enjoy dinner on their back porch.
They had an old TV with a VCR built in. You know the ones that actually sat on a table versus being mounted on a wall. They would watch the news or their favorite show while enjoying a humid summer night out back.
This is where I was introduced to the cantaloupe sundae. Mrs. Cully made this summer dessert pretty regularly. She would simply slice a small cantaloupe in half, scoop out the seeds and add vanilla bean ice cream to the center. She always told me, it had to be vanilla bean ice cream. It was the best!
For us kids, she would cut the cantaloupe into small cubes and add the ice cream on top. But the proper way to serve it was to cut the cantaloupe in half, clean it out, add the ice cream to the center. It was always so impressive to me that you could use the cantaloupe as an edible bowl. (minus the rind)
All that said, it wasn’t until recently when I saw a small cantaloupe and thought about Mrs. Cully’s famous dessert. I made a few Healthyish additions, but this cantaloupe sundae is still just as amazing as I remember all those years ago.
Enjoy!

How to Pick a Ripe Cantaloupe
Avoid melons that feel too hard or too soft. They should have a slight give when pressed.
The color should be golden brown or yellow. Any green color indicts it is not rip yet.
Give them a smell! They should have a sweet smell. If there is no smell it is not ready.
